Maine’s Senate president is attempting to revive a bid to require employers in the state to provide paid sick days to employees. Similar legislation failed in the House last year, but the new push comes amid concern over the H1N1 flu.
Some Maine lawmakers view the virus as a “public health emergency” that demands sick employees stay at home. However, many employees who do not get paid sick leave find staying at home difficult.
Under legislation, businesses with fewer than 25 employees would be required to give them an hour of sick time for every 80 hours they worked. The rate would apply to full- and part-time employees.
Larger businesses would be mandated to let employees accrue up to six paid sick days a year.
No other state has paid sick day requirements. Several other states are considering similar legislation.
