Three Republican lawmakers from Kansas unveiled a resolution to change the state’s constitution to exempt state residents from having to follow many of the regulations that are part of the Democratic healthcare reform legislation.
The resolution will be introduced in January and will need to pass both heavily Republican chambers with two-thirds of the vote. If it can reach that threshold, it would go before the voters in 2010.
Under the resolution, residents would not be compelled to purchase health insurance, and employers would not be required to offer health insurance for their employees.
Several other states, including Florida, Indiana, Minnesota and North Dakota, have filed or prefiled similar measures, according to the free market group American Legislative Exchange Council.
