Safety Management Track

Safety management systems (SMSs) have become a standard for large and medium-sized commercial operators, and the positive effect that SMS has on safety in those arenas is significant. Some aspects of these established systems make it difficult for smaller businesses or private operators to implement. This course will offer an overview of new International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST) SMS programs and information that will allow small operations to reap the same safety benefits large operators have come to enjoy.

Learning Objectives/Benefits

The student will learn how to develop and implement an SMS in a small commercial or private operation. There will be an overview of new IHST SMS programs they can utilize in this endeavor, as well as tricks and techniques to successfully improve safety.

Instructor

As an instructor pilot, contract instructor and, as of this year, the Airborne Law Enforcement Association’s safety program manager, Bryan Smith has presented training material to pilots, flight officers, administrators, and law enforcement officers who utilize aviation assets across the country. He uses his personal experiences (both in the aircraft and on the ground) in performing the tasks he teaches to connect with students and to ensure the information has real-world application.
