Description

It is common knowledge that a correctly tracked and balanced helicopter main rotor and tail rotor improves the ride, reduces wear, and saves money. However, not everyone knows that it is also beneficial to monitor, record, and trend engine and power train vibrations, operating exceedances, and even entire flights, from start-up to shutdown. Doing so greatly enhances overall quality and safety, while reducing costs.

This course will provide attendees with basic vibration concepts on everything from portable carry-on health monitoring equipment to complex fully on-board factory install systems, such as health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS) and helicopter operations monitoring programs. Topics will include —

  • Basic vibration concepts
  • Relevant Federal Aviation Administration, Civil Aviation Authority, and European Aviation Safety Agency regulations and guidelines
  • Advantages of HUMS and helicopter flight-data monitoring (HFDM), using case studies
  • Program structure, personnel requirements, and training
  • How to choose the right program
  • Flight operations quality assurance
  • Installations and electrical
  • Future technologies for vibration-health-usage monitoring.

This course does not endorse or promote any manufacturer of helicopter health, usage, and flight-data monitoring equipment. Nor does this course include content to imply a preference for a particular manufacturer or superiority of any system over another.

Objective
Attendees will understand the benefits of HUMS and HFDM and the guidelines for administering these programs. Attendees will also be able to make informed decisions regarding establishing HUMS and HFDM programs and purchasing equipment that is best suited to their organization’s individual requirements and budget.

Instructor
Rick Barnett has worked for Bristow, formally Air Logistics, for more than 30 years and currently serves as its North America HUMS manager. Barnett was instrumental in establishing the industry-leading aircraft health monitoring program at Bristow’s North American Business Unit. He has provided training in vibration, health monitoring, and HUMS for more than 200 maintenance technicians worldwide. Barnett is an active promoter of helicopter vibration monitoring in the aviation industry, for which he has been awarded the FAA Baton Rouge FSDO Aviation Technician of the Year Award (2003), the Air Logistics Annual Safety Award (2004), and the HAI Aviation Maintenance Technician Award (2004).

Doug Shaw
has more than 25 years of experience in the helicopter industry. He is currently the maintenance training manager at Bristow North America, with secondary duties as flight training device engineer and in training department special projects. One of Shaw’s projects includes serving as the company’s HUMS and HFDM research educator, responsible for advising management on issues related to program development. Shaw has a B.S. in engineering from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and recently received Bristow’s highest recognition award, the Bruce English Award, for outstanding service.

In addition, specially selected guest speakers will present information in their respective areas of expertise.

Who Should Attend
Individuals responsible for establishing a HUMS or HFDM program, for making decisions regarding HUMS and HFDM programs for helicopter operations of all sizes, or for administering or expanding an existing program; individuals who will make decisions on the type of equipment to purchase; and those involved in quality and safety who are interested in the benefits of helicopter health, usage, and flight-data monitoring. In addition, maintenance technicians who wish to further their knowledge in this area will find the course useful.
