Description
This one-day introductory course will provide attendees with the basic concepts, practical techniques, and various methodologies essential to helicopter accident investigation. Attendees will learn the essentials of helicopter rotor systems, flight controls, performance variables, flight hazards, and material analysis and characteristics.

This course will provide an in-depth look at the common causal factors involved in helicopter accidents or incidents, the basic techniques used to investigate an accident or incident, such as fracture analysis, and aircraft performance topics including antitorque systems and loss of tail rotor effectiveness, translation and wind effects, main rotor system characteristics and low G, vortex ring and autorotation, and dynamic rollover and resonance.

Objective
At the completion of this course, attendees will have a basic understanding of performance considerations for helicopter rotor systems, common hazards for helicopter operations, and the steps and factors for conducting an investigation.

Instructor
Jack Cress is an expert in the field of accident investigation, with more than 30 years of experience training helicopter professionals for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the International Center for Aviation Safety, the International Center for Safety Education, the Sun Safety Institute, and the University of Southern California’s Aviation Safety and Security Program. Cress was a career helicopter pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps, flying nearly 4,000 hours during his 24 years of service, including as a maintenance test pilot in the H-46. Cress’ nonflying military duties were predominantly maintenance oriented, including maintenance administration and control and quality assurance, and he was twice assigned to teach for the U.S. Navy Aviation Safety School’s accident investigation and mishap prevention programs. Cress has a M.S. in aeronautical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
