The system safety process requires specialized technical and managerial skills to identify and control hazards that lead to incidents and accidents. This application-based course will provide attendees with the resources and skills they need to design, implement, and refine a safety system process within their organization.

This course includes a safety management system (SMS) gap analysis exercise. Each attendee will use a copy of their company safety plan or SMS program to perform an SMS gap analysis that is customized for their organization. Attendees will use their individual results to determine which components and elements of an SMS are currently in place and which require modification to meet SMS implementation requirements.

This course adheres to guidelines established by the International Helicopter Safety Team in the SMS Toolkit, as well as guidance provided by HAI, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transport Canada, and the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

At the completion of this course, attendees will be able to —

  • Describe the five-step system safety process
  • Understand the components of an effective SMS
  • Trace the causes of an accident or incident
  • Recognize the costs associated with these events
  • Perform an SMS gap analysis
  • Understand their role as change agents in managing their organization’s safety culture.
