Oregon Aero Expansion Moves Toward Greater Efficiency, Increased Capacity
Scappoose, Ore. – An expansion that will allow Oregon Aero to even better serve its aviation customers through increased production and greater efficiencies is well on its way to completion. Since a groundbreaking held in September, the new 22,000-square-foot facility has risen from a wide-open field at the Scappoose Industrial Airpark and should be operational later this spring.
“It’s coming along nicely, and it’s just exciting to think about how it will really enhance what we do for all of our customers,” said Tony Erickson, Chief Operating Officer for Oregon Aero. “The construction team at JH Kelly has done a great job, and we’re pleased to see the project moving forward as planned.”
The $1.5 million hangar and office space, financed by the state of Oregon and the Port of St. Helens, will house operations for the development and manufacturing of Oregon Aero’s advanced, maximum-comfort, safer aviation seating systems and aircraft interior upgrades.
When it’s completed later this spring, the new building will nearly double Oregon Aero’s overall square footage to approximately 50,000 square feet. In addition to increased production capacity, the facility will allow Oregon Aero to consolidate all of its operations at the Scappoose Industrial Airpark, including its engineering department and machine shop, which are currently located in the nearby town of St. Helens.
The building also will accommodate a wide range of fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft and house the company’s FAA-approved Repair Station, customer service department and a conference room.
“We are incredibly excited about this expansion and all of the progress made so far,” Erickson said. “By the middle of this year, we will be up and running at full-speed and doing a lot more of what we do best.”
A grand opening event and dedication for the new facility will be scheduled and announced later this spring or early this summer.

Oregon Aero, Randy Mains Team Up for CRM Training Launch at HELI-EXPO
Scappoose, Ore. – One aviation pioneer will join another at this year’s HELI-EXPO to officially launch a new endeavor aimed at reducing the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service accident rate - and saving lives.
Randy Mains, a certified CRM/AMRM instructor, assessor and facilitator, will be at Oregon Aero’s booth, N3431, at HELI-EXPO from March 5-7 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The event officially launches the new Oregon Aero CRM/AMRM (Crew Resource Management/Air Medical Resource Management) training program, with Mains serving as Chief CRM/AMRM Instructor.
“This program is something we’ve been wanting to do for years, so we’re excited to see it come to fruition at HELI-EXPO,” said Jack Todaro, Director of Business Development for Oregon Aero. “And I can’t think of a better way to kick it off than having Randy there with us, sharing his experience and perspective on the importance of CRM/AMRM training.”
A decorated combat veteran with more than 13,000 flight hours, Mains has been a pioneer in the HEMS industry and an advocate for comprehensive CRM/AMRM training. His approach to the training, which Oregon Aero offers through intensive 8-hour courses at a customer’s site, includes multiple modules covering everything from human error and company safety culture to decision-making and communication.
“When CRM/AMRM is done right and everyone buys into it, you can stop the accidents,” Mains said, noting that CRM/AMRM training is now FAA-mandated for Part 135 Operations. “I’m looking forward to working with Oregon Aero on this program and spreading the word at HELI-EXPO. We really can make a difference.”
During HELI-EXPO, Mains will be on hand to talk about the new training program, which offers an initial single-day 8-hour course as well as a yearly recurrent 8-hour course. Both are held at an operator’s site and satisfy all FAA, EU-OPS, JAR ICAO, Canadian and CAMTS requirements. Oregon Aero will be booking courses at the expo for both HEMS and airborne law enforcement.
In addition, Mains will sign copies of his books, and there will be a drawing for his books as well.
“We’re excited to get this project off the ground at HELI-EXPO,” Todaro said, “and to start helping reduce the HEMS accident rate anywhere we can.”
