They say the best defense is a good offense. On Capitol Hill, congressional members and staff who understand general aviation (GA) and can explain the impacts of legislation on GA to fellow members is one of our best defenses. That is why it is important that HAI members contact their congressional representatives and urge them to join the GA Caucus if they are not already a member, or thank them for their support if they already are.
The need for the GA caucuses in the U.S. House and Senate has never been greater, as budgetary concerns and sequestration have Congress looking at dramatic cuts in programs that are vital to air safety, such as eliminating 75 percent of the contract towers in the U.S. At the same time, helicopters are again under assault as some members of Congress want to order the FAA to make airspace changes that are based solely on noise complaints, without regard for their impact on safety.
The Alliance for Aviation Across America, an organization dedicated to demonstrating the value of general aviation to whole communities – not just pilots and operators, and of which HAI is a member, has posted a listing of members of Congress, including those who are already members of the GA Caucuses. Please take a moment to look and see if your senator and representative are members. If they are not, consider contacting them and urging them to join. If they already are members, contact them anyway. Thank them for their support and urge them to keep up the good work.
