The U.S. Senate on Wednesday passed a spending bill to keep the federal government operating for the remainder of this fiscal year. It did not include an amendment offered by Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) that would have provided funding to keep air traffic control towers open — or any other amendment that would have given federal agencies flexibility in dealing with budget cuts mandated by sequestration.

The House has indicated they will accept the Senate bill without changes.

National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) President Paul Rinaldi warned on Feb. 27 that the sequester will affect "every passenger, every general aviation pilot, and every freight hauler" and is "reckless" in its across-the-board nature and in not differentiating between essential and non-essential personnel.
