HAI President Matt Zuccaro was saddened to learn of the tragic events that took place in Boston during the marathon on Monday, April 15. He and the entire HAI staff extend their condolences to the families of those killed and injured in what now appears to have been an act of terrorism.

The Obama administration's fiscal 2014 budget once again has singled out corporate and general aviation with a proposal for a $100-per-flight fee after September 30, as well as changing the current tax depreciation schedule for general aviation aircraft from the current five years to seven years.

On Saturday, April 6, Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters, Maverick Helicopters, Sundance Helicopters, and Heli-USA came together to honor a fellow pilot and mechanic that recently passed away due to medical complications. Richard Whitbeck worked for all four companies over the past 20 years, flying in the Grand Canyon and surrounding areas.

A record 223 Members of Congress have co-signed a letter to President Obama opposing $100 per flight user fees on commercial and general aviation. The effort was spearheaded by the co-chairs of the House General Aviation Caucus, Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) and Rep. John Barrow (D-Ga.).

Osvil "Ozzie" York, a "polite and humble" pioneer of vertical flight, passed away on March 25, 2013. Ozzie enjoyed a remarkable 56-year career with Allied Helicopter Service that covered the early development of the helicopter industry. "The helicopter community has lost one of its true pioneers," noted HAI President Matt Zuccaro.

The FAA has released dates for the 149 contract towers to be closed over the next five weeks under government-wide sequestration budget cuts. The least busy towers are closing first under a "pre-decisional" FAA list predicated on towers with fewer than 150,000 total operations and fewer than 10,000 commercial operations in Fiscal Year 2012.

HELI-EXPO 2013 was the biggest EXPO to date. The exhibit hall was packed with the most exhibitors and highest number of attendees ever. And of course, there were the helicopters!
