Darfield, New Zealand (radionz.co.nz) - A seriously injured paraponter has been flown to Christchurch Hospital with spinal injuries after a dramatic rescue near the Mount Cheeseman ski field in Darfield. Westpac rescue helicopter pilot Stuart Farquhar says the man was in a precarious position on a steep rocky slope, secured only by his parachute which was snagged on a rock.

Chilliwack Times - Anyone lost at Canada Education Park in Chilliwack over the Oct. 19/20 weekend would have been in excellent hands. About 350 search and rescue personnel, representing every province and territory in Canada, were on hand at the RCMP's Pacific Region Training Centre for SARScene. The annual national search and rescue conference featured live demonstrations, including a longline helicopter rescue simulation and a demonstration of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Skimming over the subdivisions, farms and swamps of southwestern Miami-Dade County at 140 miles per hour, a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue helicopter with vials of the treatment that could save the ranger's life reached the center of Everglades National Park in 15 minutes.

Hainan Province, China (china.org.cn) - Rescuers on Oct. 1 saved 14 fishermen, retrieved four bodies and are continuing their search for 58 others missing in the South China Sea after Typhoon Wutip has sunk three fishing boats since Sept. 29.

AVweb - A Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter crew has won two of the most prestigious search and rescue awards for a daring mission into the teeth of one of the biggest winter storms to hit North America earlier this year. The servicemen will pick up the Cormorant Trophy and the Prince Philip Helicopter Rescue Award in London on Oct. 23.
