Ireland (independent.ie) - A female hillwalker was at the centre of a daring rescue operation Dec. 26 when she fell and fractured her leg on the side of Mount Brandon. The Irish Coast Guard at Valentia received a call shortly before 3pm and a helicopter from Shannon Rescue 115 was dispatched to the scene.

Bay of Islands, New Zealand (Otago Daily Times) - A skipper was hospitalised with broken teeth and ribs and back injuries after his boat hit rocks in darkness at Tapeka Point in the Bay of Islands. The 52-year-old skipper had to be winched aboard a rescue helicopter and flown to hospital.

Kent, England (yourcounty.co.uk) - Life-saving charity Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance has become the first air ambulance in the U.K. to launch a 24-hour Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), following three years of research and preparatory work. Up until recently, and unlike the rest of Europe, the service could only fly by daylight.

Lexington, Ky. (kentucky.com) - Lexington police said a piece of fancy equipment helped them find a missing teenager on Dec. 17. Lexington police's helicopter unit was asked to help with the search because it has Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR), a thermal imaging system.

(ABC News Online) - A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a 60-year-old man whose goat had kicked him off a Puerto Rican mountainside Tuesday. The unidentified man fell an estimated 100 feet down the mountain in Yauco, Puerto Rico, after his goat became unruly, according to a Coast Guard statement.

It may be this week’s most often repeated helicopter story. On Tuesday, December 17, a Royal Canadian Air Force Griffon helicopter — the RCAF’s name for the Bell 412EP — plucked a crane operator who had been trapped 18 stories above the ground by a raging fire below from the very end of the boom.
