Helicopters were used extensively during the first few hours of the deadly landslide in Oso, Washington on March 22, 2014. Snohomish County Sheriff's Bell UH-1H "SnoHawk 10" was first on scene shortly after the slide occurred and immediately began life saving rescue operations. U.S. Naval Station Whidbey Island dispatched their Sikorsky HH-60 Jayhawk along with Navy firefighters who assisted in freeing people trapped in the massive debris piles.

A ground-breaking ceremony has marked the start of construction of a new multi-million pound search and rescue base at Humberside Airport. Two search and rescue helicopters, operated by Bristow Helicopters Ltd, together with their crews and support team, will be housed in the state-of-the-art hangar, once fully operational in April next year.

When Canadian helicopter pilot John Coughlin first flew over the Hazelwood mine fire in its first week, he thought he'd been assigned to the Chernobyl disaster. "I've fought a lot of fires in my time, but I've never fought anything like this before," he said. Coughlin is one of a rotational crew of eight pilots at the controls of the two six-tonne Sikorsky S-61s, which have developed a familiar presence over Morwell's skylines, scrambling daily to water bomb the open cut fire.

Cornwall, England (capitalbay.com) - The pilots of Rescue 193 can be scrambled in 15 minutes during the day and are on 24-hour standby. The unit flies eight Sikorsky Sea King helicopters based at Culdrose, Cornwall, guarding the rugged coastline. The aircraft uses two Rolls-Royce Gnome turbine engines, each producing more than 1,400 horse power. Helicopter crews were called into action more than two-dozen times during the stormy weather over the festive period.
