Northwestern Wisconsin residents might soon notice a helicopter cruising over their neighborhoods. Xcel Energy plans to start a six-day aerial inspection its transmission lines on April 21. Helicopter crews will look for defects, loose fittings, and other potential problems that could cause outages.

The House Armed Services Committee, Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee requested that GAO continue to monitor the VXX presidential helicopter acquisition through a series of reviews. Subsequently, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014 mandated that GAO continue to review and report on the program annually to the congressional defense committees.

Bighorn sheep are skilled mountain climbers. But one group recently made it over the peaks of the Sierra Nevada crest in record time. As part of an ongoing effort to return endangered Sierra Nevada bighorns to more of their historic range, state and federal wildlife workers captured 14 of the animals in the Inyo National Forest and transported them by helicopter to the Big Arroyo area of Sequoia National Park on the range's west side.

The prospects for the rotorcraft industry in China are auspicious as is evidenced by the 20-percent growth of the fleet in the country last year, as well as increasing interest from local companies in producing their own aircraft. Last year the entire fleet (465 helicopters, 424 based in Mainland China) grew by 20 percent.

The U.S. Army National Guard is pushing back against a plan to send all of its 192 Apache attack helicopters to the active duty Army. In exchange, the Guard and Reserve components would receive 111 UH-60 Blackhawk transport and utility helicopters from the Army.
