Madrid, Spain (AP) — Authorities say three policemen have died while trying to aid an injured mountaineer after their rescue helicopter clipped a mountainside and crashed during a mission in northern Spain, killing all aboard.

 HAI, along with the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) and the Air Medical Operators Association (AMOA), are continuing their work with the FAA to ensure that helicopter air ambulance operators have the information they need to comply with the helicopter safety rule issued earlier this year — often known as the HEMS rule.

 The FAA's Western-Pacific Region has issued a letter to airmen requesting helicopter pilots flying under visual flight rules (VFR)  in the Los Angeles Basin to use specially assigned transponder codes. Civil general aviation rotorcraft are requested to use Mode 3 transponder code 1205 when operating within a specified area (see Read More section). Law enforcement and first responder helicopters are asked to use 1206 when operating in the same area. The change goes into effect on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 5 a.m. local time (1200 UTC).

US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Office of Management and Budget Director Shaun Donovan this week authored a joint column warning that funds for fighting wildfires are rapidly running out for this year — and that unless something is done soon, the US Forest Service (USFS) will have to dip into funding meant for other programs, including those intended to prevent the fires or mitigate their impact.

Red Lake, Minn. (WDAY TV) - Four people, including two children, were rescued after a night time search on Red Lake in Minnesota. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection Helicopter from the North Dakota Air Branch were able to pin point the location of the four lost in their boat.
